All Thorowgood, Fairfax, and Kent & Masters saddles are designed with a changeable gullet bar system, allowing precise saddle fitting as your horse’s shape develops over time.
Available in S-Bar and R-Bar options, these gullet bars enable your saddle fitter to select the correct width to suit your horse’s wither profile. Whether your horse is young, gaining muscle, or changing condition seasonally, the adjustable gullet system ensures long-term comfort and optimal saddle fit.
Gullet bars can be swapped quickly and easily, making them a practical and cost-effective solution for maintaining correct saddle fit without replacing your saddle.

Gullet Bar FAQs
How do I know if I need an S-Bar or R-Bar?
The bar type depends on your specific saddle model and tree design. S-Bars and R-Bars are different lengths and are not interchangeable. If you are unsure, check your saddle model or contact us before ordering.
Can I change the gullet bar myself?
Gullet bars are designed to be easily changeable. However, we strongly recommend that adjustments are carried out or checked by a qualified saddle fitter to ensure correct fit and your horse’s comfort.
What do the colour widths mean?
Each gullet bar colour corresponds to a specific width fitting. Your saddle fitter will advise which width best suits your horse’s current shape.
Is the XXW (Silver) width available in both bar types?
No. The XXW (Silver) width is available in S-Bar only.
Will changing the gullet bar completely refit my saddle?
No. While the gullet bar adjusts the width at the front of the saddle, overall saddle fit also depends on panel shape, flocking, and tree design. Always have the full fit assessed if your horse’s shape has changed significantly.
